Planespotters made a mad dash to Melbourne Airport this morning as the world’s largest passenger aircraft touched down 40 minutes ahead of schedule.
The Airbus A380 superjumbo arrived about 11am from Dubai on a test flight aimed at proving it is ready for service. The visit is designed to demonstrate that the A380 can be turned around under normal airline operating conditions. The airliner is due to fly out of Melbourne to Manila at 8am tomorrow.
About 150 spectators gathered outside to the airport’s southern fence to watch the superjumbo land.
“It’s the airliner of the future and a very significant aircraft in aviation history,” said aviation enthusiast Dion Makowski. “It’s only the second time we’ve seen an A380 in Melbourne so we’ve made an effort to get here and witness this historic moment.”
